So, I found a site that has a large series of mapping tutorials. One of which was aptly labelled: "Making continents in photoshop".

Intrigued, I investigated.

3 hours later, I give you:

A landmass!

The beginning of a world map?

Nice, that looks pretty cool. On the overall, it looks a bit unnaturally square shaped though, probably thanks to making one big landmass take up the whole picture plane. Though I've been using automaps for world design and Photoshop for only the finer details (I think the scale is off in that second one anyway...), I must say there's probably something to be said for making your own.

Kind of like being told something, and then knowing that you you'd never be able to say you'd figured it out on your own afterwards...

Could you put a link to this tutorial in?

Heavy use of the Clouds, and Difference Clouds renders, for the most part.

Makes sense. Apparently the render clouds filter gets used. A lot. By everyone. Heh. You know... what's your map for anyways? World map of Elemestia?

That, really, was just a test; there's no place on Elemestia where it starts as an arctic circle and ends with a blistering sand dune.

I'll have to get around to do thing a few more times and come up with a legitimate landmass for Elemestia itself. Or at least Ferilan.

No idea what where those names go in general. You should post a sketch of the place, even with ballpoint and a scrap of kleenex if you've done it. If you want. I'm kinda curious...
